Description
Long before we consciously define ourselves, we receive messages about how people are expected to behave.
Be strong. Be attractive. Be independent. Be nurturing. Do not cry. Be confident. Be agreeable. Take control. Do not take up too much space.
Some of these expectations are explicit. Others become so normal that we barely notice them.
The Masculinity and Femininity Reflection Workbook invites you to examine those messages and consider which ones genuinely belong to you.
This is not a workbook about deciding what men or women should be. Instead, it explores how ideas surrounding masculinity and femininity can influence identity, relationships, emotions, confidence and self-expression.
Through guided prompts and exercises, you will explore themes including:
- early messages about masculinity and femininity
- gender roles and social expectations
- strength, vulnerability and emotional expression
- appearance and body expectations
- relationships and power
- independence and dependence
- confidence and assertiveness
- family and cultural influences
- expectations attached to gender
- separating personal identity from inherited roles
- defining masculinity and femininity on your own terms
Who would you be without the script?
Some expectations may feel meaningful to you.
Others may feel restrictive.
Some may have protected you in particular environments but no longer reflect who you are.
The purpose of this workbook is not to replace one set of rules with another. It is to help you notice the rules you have absorbed and decide consciously how much influence they should continue to have.
You are invited to explore contradiction rather than avoid it.
You can value strength and vulnerability.
Independence and connection.
Tradition and change.
Identity does not always need to fit neatly into opposing categories.
Sometimes understanding yourself begins with questioning the categories themselves.
